The wall that the fresco paintings are on may crack or starts to split, during the 18 th century they had to find a way for the conservation and restoration of the works of art. (2) Most of the large frescos had to be made in sections, not just the drawing but the actual wall of plaster had to be applied in small sections daily. Mezzo fresco is in between, painting onto a wall that is almost but not quite dry. Secco painting is done on dry plaster which requires mixing some type of oil or glue for the paint to stick on the wall. Which is only mixing pigments with water on a thin layer of wet plaster. There are three main types of fresco techniques: Buon or true fresco, Secco and Mezzo-fresco. This gives the color great permanence and resistance to aging.” (1) The fresco painting has been around for a very long time, it goes back to 1600 BC.
After the color are applied to the plaster, the colors get imbibed into the surface, “and as the wall dries and sets, the pigment particles become bound or cemented along with the lime and sand particles. The artist draws his painting on paper then traces the outline of the drawing onto the plaster wall, and then starts drawing with the pigment colors. Three coats of plaster mixed with sand or other components are applied to a wall and set for a certain time. The colors are made by mixing dry powder pigments with water. Fresco painting is a method of painting water based pigments on plaster. In class, we have talked about fresco paintings and the techniques of making one.
